Scott Joplin wrote more than 40 piano rags, but he also wrote two operas; A Guest of Honor and Treemonisha. A Guest of Honor was performed in Joplin's lifetime, but since then the music has been lost. Treemonisha was never performed while Joplin was alive, but it has been performed since then. Joplin also wrote a symphony, but the music has.

The Knocky Parker recording on Audiophile are more like "jazz impressions" of Joplin rags (sans repeats) and are more a musical curiosity than a worthy "complete Joplin" entry. The Scott Kirby set is very good, but assembling all of the independently-issued discs can be tough/5(11).

William Albright Scott Joplin: The Complete Rags, Marches & Waltzes () [Compilation] Although Albright is somewhat liberal with his embellishments, making this set potentially frustrating for purists, the performances have a breezy quality that exude pure joy, bringing out the best in these magnificent songs.

This two-disc set is billed as Joplin's "complete rags," which isn't quite true--there are several more in William Albright's Joplin: Marches, Waltzes & Rags. But there are 34 rags in this set, most of them essential bits of Americana. I had been partial to a Joplin set /5(8).
